Womens Day 2017

The world of work is changing, with significant implications for women. On one hand, technological advances and globalization bring unprecedented opportunities for those who can access them. On the other hand, there is growing informality of labor, income inequality and humanitarian crises. It has been observed since the early 1900 s and is now recognized each year on March 8. Is is not affiliated with any one group, but brings together governments, women’s organisations, corporations and charities.

Why do we celebrate it?

The original aim to achieve full gender equality for women the world has still not been realized. A gender pay gap persists across the globe and women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Figures show that globally, women’s education, health and violence towards women is still worse than that of men.

The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,” says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem. Thus International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level.

The day is observed at the United Nations with a specific theme each year. For the International Women’s Day 2014, the theme is Inspiring for Change. It aims to influence and strengthen the international community’s commitment to put an end to violence against women. It intends to introduce a positive change to balance the status of women and men in an unequal world.
